Southern Rhodesian Ridgeback Association Open Show 2021

Judge: Clare Boggia

I’d like to thank the committee for the invitation to judge your lovely breed. After the inevitable COVID related postponements, I really was looking forward to the day and was not disappointed with the lovely quality entry.

I was glad to be able to judge the hounds outside, despite the damp start to the day, as dogs always perform so much better than indoors.

Thank you to my stewards Andy and Adam who kept things running smoothly and kept me and exhibitors supplied with mints! Temperaments was excellent with just a couple being a little shy, but not surprising post COVID.

Only found one dog with incorrect ridge. Lots of promising youngsters coming through which bodes well for the breed.

Best in Show Winner – Kiromol Heaven Can Wait (AI) bred and owned by Paul & Liz Storey and Lena Piehl.

Minor Puppy Dog 3 entries, 1 absentee

Mansfield and Kirbys’ Shingwidsi Tsholo Light. Handsome lad to start the day, in excellent condition and jacket. Masculine head, and has nice proportions. Strong neck, set into clean shoulders. Good body for age, has correct and powerful hindquarters. Easy profile gait, just needs to drop in chest and tighten up in front which will come with maturity – a young promising puppy

Marks’ Wolstonbury Sun King (Ay2) Exuberant youngster who was enjoying himself which made assessment of him and his movement very difficult. Rather a lot of wrinkle on head at the moment, dark eye, good strong jaw and teeth. Clean lines, and nice deep chest.

Puppy Dog 3,0

Priorpark Perfect Timing Lovely puppy who I wrote at the time ‘ a flowing series of curves’ . Lovely to put your hands on, masculine head, strong neck, good bone and feet. Being very picky would prefer a slightly stronger topline but still so young. This dog comes into his own on the move, such fluidity for one so young.

Best Puppy in Show

Pictons Priorpark Point and Click At a very different stage to his brother, I liked his masculinity. Very strong head, would prefer slightly less cheek. Lovely deep chest, strong bone and good topline. Has a clean profile action but would prefer slightly less wrist action when forward moving but should tighten with maturity
Sofala Mizar.

Junior Dog 4, 1

Parsons’ Priorpark Perfect Timing. Preferred this youngster’s cleaner movement to second.

Brookers’ Rozelridge Lucky Thirteen No mistaking this is a male, rather strong in head, good eye shape and colour, and good ear set held close, excellent dentition. Strong bone, good feet, nice sweeping underline and in excellent jacket.

Kiromel Baron Zuko

Novice Dog 5, 3

Pictons’ Priorpark Point and Click See puppy class

Tanner Baldwin and Baldwins’ Barfordridge Rudolph Stronger in head than winner, has a lovely dark eye and good ear carriage. Rather long in body which spoilt the overall balance as has pleasing front and hindquarters

Post Grad Dog 5, 3

Houses’ Diamondridge Keep It Dark for Kemgordoni. Two very different dogs and this lad was ultra male, masculine head, would prefer slightly stronger underjaw, strong topline with nice sweeping underline. Strong tail set, good second thigh, preferred his hindquarters to 2.

Little and Littles’ Nuthouse Abracadabra. Lighter in build than winner and would prefer just a little more bone to him. Outgoing lad, with pleasing head and expression.

Limit Dog 6, 2

Varying type within this class especially in heads

Hurns’ Diamondridge Dark Delight of Matikiridge Curvaceous and strong red wheaten male. Pleasing head, lovely neck set into clean shoulders. Liked his sweeping underline, good bone and neat feat. Clearly exercised well with strong powerful hindquarters, had strong second thigh which was lacking in some.

Mitchelsons’ Diamondridge Dream Chaser at Voortrekker. A handsome dog that has nice flowing lines, shorter than winner, would benefit from a few less ounces to enhance his outline. Has a nice easy gait and free moving.

Maidments’ Amahle Alo

Open Dog 7, 3

Again, differing types and some lovely dogs

Storey and Piehls’ Kiromel Heaven Can Wait (AI) This boy was so ‘on form’ today, he owned the ring with his fun outlook and ring presence. Please to award him Best Dog and Best In Show. He still has some maturing to do, but I could not deny him top honours. Loved his head and expression, powerful underjaw, beautiful front assembly and has clean lines throughout. Best mover in the class as he just flowed on the move working with his handler all the way

Little and Littles’ Ch Sofala Joe the Lion I really liked this lad, mature, strong, masculine and could do a day’s work. Very expressive head, he too also had nice clean lines, super underline, would prefer a little more condition to coat to complete the picture. Strong hindquarters which in turn showed in his powerful movement.

Whites’ Carlincox Gold Star JW

Veteran Dog 2, 0

All veterans shown today were a credit to their owners as in super condition, thank you for bringing them

Brookers’ Rozelridge Gate Crasher Preferred the cleaner athletic lines of this lad, and he still had super bone. He had a lovely attentive expression, good neck, strong top line which was held on the move as well. Powerful and precise mover and at one with his handler

Walkers’ Amahle Don’t Stop Me Now. Powerful lad in super condition. Nice ear carriage, strong neck and good bone, probably age related but would prefer elbows set under a little more, deep chest and well ribbed back, good tail set and moved cleanly

Special Veteran Dog / Bitch 2, 0

Mansfields and Kirbys’ Ch Shingwidsi Tshelete Silk An 11 ½ year old bitch who had such lovely overall balance to her, wish I’d seen her at her prime. I forgave her age related slight dip in top line on the move, she still possesses a really lovely front assembly, with neatest of feet, powerful hindquarters, short hocks and nice easy mover

Smith and Hawkins’ Veldtkammer Hot Shot of Lonaza ShCM Younger than winner at just 11 years! He is a strong male, in super jacket, slightly straighter in shoulder than winner but has strong hindquarters and good second thigh, with a strong top line and clean lines on the move

Pykes’ Ch Rozelridge Who the Man

Minor Puppy Bitch 3, 2

Mansfield and Kirbys’ Shingwidsi Tshedisa Light Ultra feminine six month old puppy. Good head proportions, good ear set and carried close. Such a lovely crest to her neck, clearly very raw, but lines flowed cleanly throughout. She has a super second thigh, and nice strong neat feet. Her handler had just got her out of the car and was a little unsettled to start with, but once settled moved out very collectively for one so young.

Puppy Bitch 2,0

Humphreys’ Priorpark Peaky Blinder Litter sister to puppy dog winner, not so developed as brother but showed beautifully for her handler to show off her very precise and easy movement. Feminine clean head and expression with liver nose and corresponding eye colour, good bone, well knuckled feet, lovely strong top line which she held very well on the move. Just a tad loose in front, but still so young and raw.

Raymonds’ Sofala Stellar This scopy young lady was a little unsettled and not keen on being handled today. Presented in excellent condition and good jacket. Has a strong clean neck, and strong bone throughout. Longer in loin than winner, but has strength. When settled moved out well with nice profile.

Junior Bitch 1, 0

Saunders’ Kiromel the Duchess of Bruet (AI) Strong bitch just out of puppy, with clean flowing lines throughout. Pretty and expressive head with nice dark eye. Elegant yet strong neck, good width to fore chest, nice depth to her chest, and really nicely balanced quarters both fore and aft. A very pleasing bitch who just needs to mature

Novice Bitch 1, 0

Tanner Baldwin and Baldwins’ Barfordbridge Zita A happy girl with feminine head, correct round expressive eyes, clean lips. Good bone, would prefer a little more in fill in front, has good return of arm. Deep chest, and nice gentle underline. Free easy profile mover, would prefer cleaner front action.

Post Grad Bitch 8, 2

Parsons’ Priorpark Pinch of Salt. Beautiful outline on this light wheaten bitch, kind expression, good eye shape and lovely ear set, also had very good nostrils. Strong body, with top line held on the move, super fore and hind quarters with nice short hocks. Had a good strong tail root. Her correct proportions enabled her to win this class on her easy and effortless movement, so very true both fore and aft.

Storey and Piehls’ Kiromel Tip Toe and Go (AI) A feminine bitch with lots to like, feminine head, nice dark eye and really good ear set. Well boned throughout, super neck and lovely clean shoulders. I felt today she was just a little soft in condition
Maidments’ Amahle Spirit Lead Me. What a shame this bitch decided she didn’t want to be gone over today as she was just lovely, look forward to seeing her in the future as I am sure she will do really well.

Limit Bitch 10,3

Maidments’ Amahle You Had Me from Hello Such a balanced bitch throughout. Like her feminine head and proportions, strong underjaw, clean neck, strong topline. Had a good strong tail set. Preferred her good powerful hindquarters with a nice strong short hocks to 2nd. Moved with purpose and drive and very true fore and aft.

Reserve best Bitch

Storey and Piehls’ Kiromel Come Up and See Me. Another super bitch, slightly longer in body than winner but still presented a balanced outline. She excels in her front assembly, good neck and clean shoulders. Strong bone and nicely knuckled feet. Moved out well

Parkers’ Kiromel As You Like It with Azuli JW

Open Bitch 8, 2

Super class

Parsons’ Priorpark Pot Kettle Black JW. Long strong neck, good ridges, clean shoulders and super return of arm. Sweeping underline, ribbed well back, strong loin and nicely round rear. This bitch can move, at one with her handler around the generous ring, a joy to watch. Best bitch and RBIS

Catley and McGimpseys’ Ch Diamondridge Roll The Dice for Royalridge JW Preferred the stronger head on this beautiful girl to winner, she has a strong neck set into clean shoulders, well balanced throughout, strong top line, clean easy profile movement, just a tad closer in rear to winner

Storey and Piehls’ Ch Kiromel Midsummer Spirit JW

Veteran Bitch 4, 1

Hurns’ Abayomi The Light Fantastic of Matikiridge This bitch won the class on her lovely easy and free movement and in such super condition. Nicely proportioned throughout, feminine head with good length of muzzle, strong neck and super fore and hind quarters

Storey and Piehls’ Ch Kiromel Kendi JW SCM Another lovely bitch, but today lacked the flow of the winner. Has a nice front with good in fill, strong bone and excellent return of arm. She has a good body with sweeping lines, feminine and yet powerful.

Tanner Baldwin and Tanners’ Janak Dronning Maud of Barfordridge
